Touhou 2: Story of Eastern Wonderland

Platform Played On: PC-98 (Emulation)

ABOUT

Touhou 2 is the first Bullet Hell game or erm Danmaku in the series. It stars Reimu as the main character as she must go out and defeat the Bad guy of this game. It also features 3 different playstyles for Reimu as well.

STORY

The story's beginning didn't really had much for the beginning but for the rest of the game there is more of a story to it. Basically there's been Monsters around the Hakurei Shrine and that Reimu takes Two Ying Yang balls and her pet turtle Genjii in order to find who's doing all of this. During her Adventure she encounters various different characters like Rika and Meira, They basically have their own things going on like how Rika is just an Engineer testing out her Tank. There's also Meira who wanted Reimu's powers in order to be stronger though Reimu kinda flirts around with her (I mean, Honestly? I can't blame her!) which after defeating Meira, Reimu was going to bury her but ended up running away. Eventually you will finally meet up with Mima who is actually the final boss (But also one of the bosses in the previous game...) and explains that she wants vengeance for humanity, But before that you must defeat Marisa aka one of the poster child characters of Touhou. In which in this context she's under Mima and you must defeat her. After that Reimu reaches Mima and kicks her ass once again in a cool looking fight IMO. After all that? Well, The Monsters are still around the Shrine.

GAMEPLAY

"ITS A RIP OFF OF UNDERT-" Joking. This game is a bullet hell game where you move around and shoot while dodging bullets and using Bombs when needed. Reimu has a small hitbox on her bow and she can move around and shoot. You can also either shoot by holding down the shoot button which shoots at a normal pace, OR you can button mash the shoot button and just melt your oppenents away. Getting more of the [P] boxes will make your attacks stronger. At the start of the game you can choose three different playstyles, You can go for more of a wide attack power where your bullets are spread out like a shotgun but consistant, Mid range where the spread is smaller and you have an auto target ability at max level, or the Narrow style which is the most offensive and shoots in a narrow view. Depending on what style you went, your bombs does something different, Which I should mind you that the bombs are even more Seizure enducing this time but it does one of the funniest fucking things.

What it does is that is that it shows a picture of Reimu's face after each explosion. I don't know why but this is just hilarious. My friend said that "Imagine fucking oppenheimer's face shows up in the nuclear bomb's muschroom cloud" and I can't stop thinking about it since. Lastly to mention is that the Bombs clears out all the projectiles on the screen or erm, that's what the middle ability did.

Overall, You just need to know the gameplay is basically the standard Touhou experience if you ever seen and played any Touhou game before. Though it's fucking Janky as shit and more barebones

MUSIC

I think the music is fine in this one, There's certainly really good tracks and Zun did a much better job from my perspective. Or to put it simply, It's Touhou music, It's good of course. Again, I will also say once again, The remixes would probably sound good and does it justice.

FINAL THOUGHTS

What an Interesting second installment. I was actually surprised to hear that this game came out at the same time of the first game. Which I feel bad to those that bought the first game thinking they would need to play that first because this game is better... Though it's still janky... Which maybe unappealing to those especially used to playing the later touhou games. The visuals in this game also is better than the first and some of the backgrounds is really cool, Especially the final battle.
