ABOUT

Undertale Yellow is a fanmade prequel to the hit 2015 game Undertale. It takes place of the human with the Yellow Soul as they venture off into Mt. Ebott to find the 5 missing children who had been missing.

STORY

Honestly, If you haven't played Undertale, You should play it before playing this game as there are references and such to the main story of undertale from a more... Fan view. But basically it's about a kid named Clover who ventures fourth into the Underground with a Toy gun on their hip and a cowboy hat that will make you say "Yeehaw". At first it's your typical Undertale beginning where you meet flowey. However there's something more odd about him, He actually tells you about dodging the bullets and is more of someone who keeps close to you while you go on your journey. As you meet Toriel and follow along with the similar schtick to undertale, There's a point where you pull a level and then you're dropped down into the deeper ruins and THAT's where the story really begins. Throughout the game, you meet various different characters with their own interests and confrontations just like in Undertale. Depending on how critical you are, you may love the characters or not really care for them. For exaple, I didn't really care too much for the characters up until you get to what I consider the "Juicy" part of the game called "The Wild East" in which is mostly a western place with very few japanese inspired parts of it. I honestly really liked this part of the story, But there's also a side plot with one of the characters who ends up being one of the most tradgic characters in the game, even comparison to Undertale itself as she had lost basically her family and her whole arc ends up being part of the finale of the game where you fight her. However, As expected, The ending of the game will ultimately will lead Clover having their soul taken away as they pass away. Which I don't think is much a spoiler considering we all know what happens to the soul. Needless to say, I did enjoy the story and the path I did take was considered the "Flawed Pacifist" since if you become truly pacifist, Kinda goes against how Asgore ended up getting the souls, But it's also the ending with a post credits scene kinda considering that this is the true ending of the game, even though in reality it's not supposed to happen that way. Anyways, I did cry at the ending. But of course with any undertale game, there of course has to be a Genocide run. Needless to say? The Genocide run has probably one of the most unintentionally funny but kinda awesome endings in the game, it's worth checking out if you can get past the fangame difficulty that they have (Oh trust me, Pacifist boss was kinda bs but I will get to that later).

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay for Undertale Yellow is about the same as Undertale itself. Despite playing as the Yellow soul, You won't be shooting enemies all the time until much, much later. This game's graphics I will say is much better than Undertale's graphics as there are more sprite animations with the characters and even details. Even at the part where you reach the hotlands, there's a little secret area in which you can watch Clover dance, It's really cute! There's of course new mechanics added to this game which you will encounter as you move on into the game, With a bunch of attacks seemingly having a bunch of warning shots before being executed and that's something I've noticed about the fights in this game being just that. There's also puzzles that are neat to do, though they tend to be either easier or harder depending on who you ask. Now as for bosses, Dalv's boss fight was honestly really fun and it's so cool seeing his attacks affects the background with every lightning strike, you can see the light kinda echos behind him in a hallways. Martlet was also a really fun fight as well and so on and so fourth EXCEPT for 2 instances where the fights was just, Not Fun or Badly implemented. If you played, I think you know where I will be leading with this. There's a boss in the Wild East called "El Bailador" in which the game plays like a rhythm game, Kinda. Basically your key by default is set to the middle and you press left or right depending on what key is to press. Well, At first it's not so bad, but later on it gets harder and harder as the battle continues. But the BIGGEST part where I have died multiple times is the final attack, And i'm someone who's pretty decent with Rhythm games! So the final attack is quite difficult cuz after you did a difficult part of it, He pauses for a moment and does an even MORE difficult part before you finally get to spare him, and it's like, Complete bullshit. ANOTHER part is with the final boss Ceroba. Now for the most part at the start it's really not too bad but it's difficult enough. And as you progress through the fight it becomes even more cluster fuck, but it's especially bad at the final phase when it becomes too clustered imo. The biggest issue is this one attack where the warnings are smaller than the actual attack itself, It's like 1.5x bigger than the warning and that there's a bunch of different bullets coming after you which makes it so hard to dodge in general. It's way harder than the Asriel Dreamurr fight in Undertale for how it was executed. And lastly with anything else, The Axis chase scene. Yeah that? It's bullshit as well and thought I was doing something wrong at first. But to do that part apparently you need to make Diagonal movement to dodge it rather than going straight which apparently Axis is still faster than you if you're going straight. Seriously, they should have made the segment much better and gave a more fair chance for the player. Otherwise, It's a good game despite these flaws.

MUSIC

The music is just fantastic, All the remixes and original music is just so good. There's actually 135 tracks to this game and I think they're all just really good tracks. Apparently there was legal trouble of having the OST of Spotify but it's been since fixed. If you loved the Undertale ost you'll love Yellow's OST even more. There's not a single one that was bad at all, even the genocide tracks are bangers overall.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Undertale Yellow is just a great fangame with a couple of flaws in the mix. Whether it be how the characters just mostly being more like a fursona over being monster designs, or how you may find a character not being as well made as it could have been made. I do think that the game really is great and the story will jerk a tear out of you and make you cry really hard when you reach the final scenes. I hate being too critical on it considering that it's been in development much longer than Undertale and had so much care to the art and music and even the story I will say. It's worth playing overall, and I'm excited to see more fangames takes it's step into making someone similar to it.
